May Day!

In conjunction with the exhibition, “For Liberty, Justice, and Equality: Unions Making History in America,” we will be featuring labor-related materials from the Prange Collection. The exhibit, which draws upon materials from the labor collections in Special Collections and University Archives at the University of Maryland, will be on display in the Maryland Room Gallery on the 1st Floor of Hornbake Library North through July 2018.

Happy May Day!  Below are two posters about the 1949 May Day in Japan.

This poster is “Shukan warera no goraku-ban/週刊われらの娯楽版” (No. 29) published by Nihon Kabe Shimbunsha/日本かべ新聞社 on March 28, 1949.  Featuring the 20th May Day, it illustrates workers participating in a demonstration against low wages and forced tax collection.

This poster is “Shukan warera no goraku-ban/週刊われらの娯楽版” (No. 30) published on April 4, 1949.  It urges readers to participate in the upcoming May Day demonstration.  It shows a worker pushing Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida out of the Diet building with his flag.

These posters have been digitized and are available in the Prange Collection. Please contact us if you would like to view them.
