Digitization of the Censored Newspaper Articles: Scanning

This is the third in a series of reports on the Censored Newspaper Articles digitization project.

After metadata creation and pre-scanning treatment of the Censored Newspaper Articles (CNA), they were then ready to be scanned. Nichimy Corporation, the UMD Libraries’ scanning vendor for this project and for the digitization of the Prange Collection books, scanned the articles onsite.  That was particularly helpful for the CNA, as there were many questions about how to scan an item, even with guidelines in place.  The scanning operators conferred with the Prange Manager on nearly a daily basis about scanning order, orientation, and file naming.  The 15,000 articles (approximately 54,000 sheets) took nine months to scan — a much slower rate than scanning the Prange Collection books.
