This book illuminates the landscape and people’s lives in the City of Beppu during the Occupation of Japan by showcasing 52 local newspapers issued from March 1946 to October 1949. It consists of five themes: (1) Repatriation, Housing Shortages, and Black Markets, (2) the Hot Spring City that Never Sleeps, (3) the Evolution of Democratic Japan, (4) A Commercial City, and (5) Blogs during the Occupation Period. The book includes images of original articles and bibliographical data, such as publisher, publishing period, and price. All of these local newspapers are accessible in the Prange Collection, the National Diet Library of Japan (main library), and higher education and research institutions with a full set of the Prange microfilms.
